Every shaded country and territory is home to a Black or African-descended population of at least 5%.
Why these numbers are uncertain — and how that changes
Countries measure "Black" or "African-descended" in wildly different ways: some run detailed ethnic censuses, some (like France) are legally barred from collecting racial data at all, and some count mixed-race populations separately from Black populations in ways that make simple comparison misleading. What you see here is a first-pass estimate, not a verified scientific figure. Our goal is to build a community around this project that checks these numbers against real census and research sources over time, country by country, until this becomes a properly sourced reference — not just for us, but for anyone who needs it. Until then, we'd rather show incomplete numbers openly than pretend to a precision we don't have.
